Help preserve critical Nevada County fire fighting capability

The town of Rough and Ready and its Fire Department have been an integral component of fire defense in Nevada County and protected the rural areas of Rough and Ready and Penn Valley for over 50 years.

Without action, all fire suppression and other critical emergency medical service will cease by the end of June 2023, creating significant safety concerns for the residents of western Nevada County and the surrounding areas.

Following a legislated 2021 conversion from volunteer staff to salaried staff, R&R can no longer support a full crew of firefighters due to lack of funding.

Despite the fire department’s best efforts to secure funding through grants and other means, increased costs have outpaced the department’s ability to make ends meet.

If the department cannot secure additional funding, the station will be unable to operate after June of 2023. This loss of fire prevention services presents a dire situation for not only the residents of Rough and Ready, but Penn Valley and the neighboring communities in western Nevada County.

Without this critical fire prevention infrastructure, our homes and community at large will be at a notably increased risk of damage and destruction. The closure of a fire department has a cascading effect, increasing response time for everyone in the community as all residents are forced to rely on fewer stations and personnel in the event of an emergency, while fire insurance coverage increases dramatically, or is lost altogether.

In order to provide essential first response service to Rough and Ready, Penn Valley, and the surrounding communities, the Rough and Ready Fire Protection District needs the financial support of citizens like you. Emergency donations are imperative to fund the Rough and Ready fire department and in supporting our local efforts to create a safer community.

Your donations are tax deductible.

United Sierra is working in partnership with the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County, a 501 (c)(3) Non-profit organization, providing for a tax deductible donation and ensuring the maximum impact of your contribution.

Thank you to all our local Nevada County businesses and sponsors fighting for this important cause!
